Why We Need Social Connection for Optimal Health
Our health is made up of many components that we sometimes overlook. Diet and activity are huge factors that many of us focus on. While these are very important, we tend to neglect our mental and emotional health. And did you know? Studies have shown that people with satisfying relationships with family, friends, and their community are happier, have fewer health problems, and live longer!
Studies have also found that a lack of strong relationships increases the risk of premature death from all causes by 50% which is roughly comparable to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day, and worse than obesity and physical inactivity.😳
Strengthening our social connections can basically be FREE, but it’s also one of the easiest (in my opinion) health strategies we can access that requires no special equipment or regimen. We especially need during this past year of social isolation and restrictions on normal social events!
Social interactions release endorphins (making us HAPPY) but they can also lower our cortisol and can help balance our hormones naturally!
So next time you are thinking about how you can be healthier, let’s not forget to focus on our relationships. How about calling a friend or family member you haven’t spoken to in awhile, writing a letter or card, or scheduling a time to see them in person. Some other ideas can include spending time with your pets, donating or volunteering your time, scheduling a date with your loved one, organizing a game night, going for a walk or gym date session or whatever sounds appealing and fun to you!
