I started making this a few months ago because of all its amazing benefits! Many people just keep it around during cold and flu season in the winter months, but Immunity support is something ideal all year round! It is best (and easier!) to prevent sickness than trying to treat it while it’s here.
While I use natural remedies for when our family does get sick, I rely on a healthy lifestyle and measures to avoid them as much as possible. This tonic can help with common cold and flu, but also with sinus infections, respiratory issues, and even digestive upsets.
It is not hard to make, but you just have to WAIT a few weeks in order to start using! The ingredients have to ferment for at least two weeks. So make this NOW before you start to feel run down. It lasts for months in the fridge, so no need to worry about it going bad.
Why all of these ingredients? Because they all have benefits of being: anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-biotic, and anti-fungal. They help to boost the immune system from within, and keep you healthy and feeling great!
There are many variations of this, but this is what works for me! Also, this recipe can be halved, doubled etc. to your needs.
INGREDIENTS:
- 1/4 to 1/3 cup yellow onion, minced (I used 1 whole small onion)
- 2 TBSP ginger powder or ginger paste OR 1/2 cup ginger root, peeled and grated
- 2 TBSP turmeric powder OR 1/2 cup turmeric root, peeled and grated
- 1/2 cup grated/minced horseradish
- 1/3 cup minced garlic
- 2 small hot peppers of your choice (optional; I usually don’t add these)
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/2 TBSP dried Rosemary, Thyme or Oregano herb (also optional)
- Juice from 1 whole lemon
- 24 oz raw Apple Cider Vinegar (organic, with the Mother)
DIRECTIONS:
- Peel then chop onions and horseradish root into small chunks.
- Peel and grate or slice with peel on the ginger root and turmeric root.
- If not using fresh ginger or turmeric, then add all of the ingredients (including dried spices) into a large glass Mason jar. Add the apple cider vinegar in last.
- Cover and (carefully) Shake well. Leave it in the fridge, on the counter or in a conspicuous place so you will remember to shake it daily.
- Leave to infuse for 2-3 weeks. 3 weeks is best unless the ingredients start to break down badly, then 2 weeks is fine. The more direct sunlight it gets the more likely this will happen.
- Line a large bowl or dish with a mesh bag (search “nut milk bag”) or cheesecloth. Strain the tonic mixture through the bag, leaving just the liquid. Transfer back into the glass jar and store in the fridge.
- This Last for many months. Take 1 tsp daily to strengthen immune system, take 1 tsp several times a day if you feel a cold or flu coming on until all symptoms are gone. I personally take about 1/2 to 1 ounce daily mixed with about 2 ounces of water as a “morning shot”, then followed with more water!
- Optional 1-2 TB of raw honey or more lemon could be added to the mixture.
