Top 10 Ways to Improve Skin Health
Improve the health of your skin and prevent signs of aging with your lifestyle! Here are my favorite tips to keeping your skin healthy:
- Hydrate! Consume at least half of your body weight in ounces of water every day. More if you are active. Unsweetened herbal teas are also great.
- Skip the Sweets: Sugar raises inflammation in the body & leaves skin looking dull, puffy, can increase breakouts & make conditions like ezcema worse. Culprits include obvious candy, sweets, soda, processed/packaged foods, but also alcohol 😳 dairy, breads, juices etc.
- Avoid inflammatory Foods: Dairy and gluten are the top two foods that cause skin issues in people. Get to know your body & how foods affect you.
- Sleep: This is the time the body naturally detoxifies, repairs & rebuilds! 7-9 hrs of quality sleep/night is ideal. You will feel AND look the benefits.
- Exercise! Moving your body increases total body blood flow, naturally supports detoxification and helps to improve your joint health, muscle health and also the collagen/connective tissue that makes up our skin. Get physical every day to improve your glow!
6. Eat the Rainbow and focus on & WHOLE real foods: Phytonutrients, B vitamins, Vit C, healthy omega 3 fats and collagen, are some top nutrients needed for healthy hormone production & hair, skin and nails.
7. Limit Recreational Substances: Alcohol, drugs, and especially smoking, which causes cellular damage, raises inflammation & increases the aging process!
8. Limit Toxic Exposure: chemicals, poor water supply, plastics, air pollution, as well as conventional skin care and beauty products all increase aging & damage our overall health.
9. Use Quality Non Toxic Skincare & Makeup: This step is SO important!! Using the right products will limit your chemical exposure, balance hormones & improve your overall (skin) health!
10. Have a consistent skin care regime: Every routine should include in this order: Cleanse/wash, tone and balance, treat, and moisturize. Some can also benefit from a spot treatment, like blemish control or an eye cream. Wondering what a routine should look like for you? BONUS SKIN CARE TACTICS:
Use Warm Water: Hot water is extremely drying and invasive on the skin. Cold water is also not ideal because it constricts the skin. Warm water is the best; it opens the pores, allowing the product to work properly, cleanse effectively, but without being too harsh and increasing damage that hot water will.
Always take your makeup off: This can be tempting, but one of the worst things you can do for your skin! Not only does it increase the risk of infections, it also does not allow the skin to be clean, breathe and repair.
Use clean sheets & towels: These are areas that we accumulate sweat, hair buildup, oil secretion, bacteria (eeek). So when washing your face, or the place where you are sleeping for hours, use clean linens to keep your face as clean as possible as well!
Wash your hands regularly and avoid touching your face: We encounter so many different surfaces, chemicals, germs, bacteria etc. every day through out hands. Not only is hand washing with non toxic soap (avoid the hand sanitizers) just good for you overall, it can also cut back on breakouts, sweaty greasy skin etc. Also try and use headphones instead of placing your phone against your face and consider headbands during exercise to keep sweat off your face.
Wear hats, sunglasses & use non-toxic sunscreen: Keep your face out of the sun to protect sun damage. Wear sunscreen when exposed during warm months and long durations. My favorite is the Beautycounter Tinted Mineral Mist, that goes on smooth and leaves a nice glow! https://www.beautycounter.com/allisonocckial/?goto=product/countersun-tinted-mineral-suncreen-mist-spf-30
Don’t neglect your eyes, neck, decolletage and hands: These are delicate areas of the body that the skin is very fine and can also use a moisturizing and treatment to keep in hydration and reduce aging signs!
